WHAT TYPES OF SOURCES DO YOU USE?

We use only historical, written records. Historical records come in a variety of types and from a variety of sources. Here are some types we commonly use:

  • Deeds, and other registered land records

  • Other government records (including census, town records, etc.)

  • Newspapers

  • Written histories

  • Documents housed in historical archives

  • Published histories, biographies and genealogies

what about pre-history?

Berkshire County has a rich history that predates the written record. However, this is a job for an archaeologist or anthropologist. If your investigation requires a specialist, we can assist in finding one for you; but will not undertake the investigation ourselves.

can you tell us about the construction methods used to build our house?

Houses can be put into their historical context by the study of architectural style, construction methods and materials. If you are interested in having such an investigation done, we can assist you in finding the right professional; but this is not our bailiwick.

public vs. private?

To ensure privacy, some records regarding the living involved with your house might be protected in archival settings. However, we do regard all public records as resources for both the living and the dead who might have occupied your house, or still do.
